If you build it, they will come
Maybe it’s the cold winter evenings at the moment, but I seem to be watching more TV and movies than I usually do. The other day I saw a great 80’s film: Field of Dreams, in which, essentially Kevin Costner builds a baseball diamond in the middle of nowhere and by Devine intervention, it turns out that because of his blind faith they do eventually come to play on his field.
This, I am afraid to say, is not what happens when you build a website. Your customers will not just accidently find your site, just because you have built it. Your website is just the start of your marketing campaign and at the same time as thinking about the design and layout, you need to start thinking about how you are going to get your new website in front of your audience.
This is where SEO comes into play. It should be an important factor when you are looking at the copy and target market for your customer base. It plays a vital role in advertising your site and works alongside any other online advertising campaigns that you are using, including pay per click (PPC) and Social Media advertising.
There are a number of tools out there that can help you with your online initiatives. Google Keyword Planner for example is a great tool to help you understand what your audience are searching for and then help you to determine what keywords you should and should not be targeting. Another helpful tool (although don’t take everything that it suggests to heart) is the add-on for WordPress websites: Yoast, which is a nifty SEO tool that helps you start to think about SEO enhancements for every piece of copy on your site.
At the end of the day, online marketing and advertising are becoming more and more important as part of your marketing strategy. Don’t leave it until the last minute. Start thinking about how you are going to advertise and how the search engines rank your site right from the start of your journey. That way – once you have built your amazing new website, you are already ahead of your marketing game.
